I loved this post today on PBS Supersisters.
Growing up a bit on the tomboyish side - alright more than a bit - I find myself struggling to raise lil' K with enough strength tempered with femininity. In this princess saturated era, I wonder if she'll turn out ok. She dubbed herself "baby 'rella" at 20 months. Since then, there has been no escaping the princesses. Though nowadays when asked she'll reply that her favorite princess is "Pocohontas, because she cares for animals and I love animals." And I'm cool with that as long as the animals live outside. achhooo!
Honestly, I'm not always so sure how to be a girl myself. Despite my Mom's best efforts I know that I did not turn out to be one of the girls from Little Women. I love contemporary art and getting my hands dirty, buying power tools and watching football. None of these activities would be classified as Victorian to be sure.
So I have a new goal! While I'm raising my little 'rella princess who loves EVERYTHING pink (thanks grrmomma =)) I'm gonna try to walk on the girlie side a little more myself and this list from the PBS sisters is a fine start.
I might even post it on the wall over my new work bench and anvil....babysteps!
Here's the list
1. You are powerful.
2. You can say no when you need to.
3. You know the right thing to do, and you can do it.
4. You are beautiful.
5. You can be strong and need tenderness at the same time.
6. Your big strong emotions are safe with me.
7. I will honor your strength.
8. I will respect you and your wishes.
9. I will teach you how to be brave and kind.
10. I will love you no matter what.
